The purpose of the Girl Scout Movement is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

The Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council was chartered on July 1, 1963 when a number of councils joined to become one. The council, chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA, serves over 10,500 girls ages 5-17 and over 3,500 adult volunteers throughout a 36-county jurisdiction within central, southside, southwestern, and western Virginia.

The council is funded by the annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale, the Nut and Candy Sale, program fees, grants, gifts from individuals and corporations, and United Ways. The council is divided into 51 service units for the purpose of operations and policy-influencing of this not-for-profit, volunteer organization.
